Amanda Brugel

Brugel is the sole Canadian part of the Season 1 group. The actress was only seen on occasion. However, by Season 2 she had become a series regularly scheduled and has been a member of the team since. When asked about her role on the show, and whether there was any parallels with her life before the cameras, Brugel stated that she drew on her own experiences with racism to relate to how the Marthas are dealt with. "I haven't used the same experience in her position as an Martha however, as I said, it's my previous experiences when I feel like I'm held back due to race in certain situations." It's not the first time I've been physically assaulted in real life because of my race. However, I've certainly been verbally abused. All racial insults which have felt like a hit, or an impact to me, I can use in the show when someone makes a statement that feels hard and biting. Madekwe comes from a mixed-race family from South London in England. She is English but her father was Nigerian. She went to The Brit School when she was 14 years old. She studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London.
